November 10, 1483: On this day, Martin Luther was born. German philosopher and reformer Martin Luther is credited with starting the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. Luther sparked a movement that changed several fundamental Christian doctrines through his words and deeds, dividing Western Christendom between Roman Catholicism and the new Protestant faiths, primarily Lutheranism, Calvinism, Anglicanism, the Anabaptists, and the anti-Trinitarians. He is among the most important people in the development of Christianity. Luther argues sacramental realism—the notion of the actual presence of Christ’s body and blood in the bread and wine—against purely spiritualistic interpretations of the Eucharist in his so-called anti-spiritualistic writings. Luther calls himself a “catholic” in these writings. He was instrumental in ensuring that the laity get the cup back.

International Tempranillo Day has since been celebrated the second Thursday of each November.
