March 27, 1676: On this day, Francis II Rakoczi was born. Francis II Rákóczi was the prince of the Estates Confederated for Liberty of the Kingdom of Hungary and the leader of Rákóczi’s War of Independence against the Habsburgs from 1703 to 1711. He was also a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a Prince of Transylvania, and an Imperial Prince. He is responsible for the creation of the first vineyard classification system in the world.

March 27, 1909: On this day, Raymond Oliver was born. Raymond Oliver was a French chef. Oliver despised nouvelle cuisine, preferring the rich ingredients of his home region of Gascony. He owned Le Grand Véfour on the Rue de Beaujolais in the Palais-Royal neighborhood of Paris for over 35 years. He passed away on  November 5, 1990.

March 27, 1954: On this day, Karen MacNeil was born. She is an author, journalist, wine instructor, and consultant from the United States. She is one of the wine industry’s foremost voices in media, having written The Wine Bible, among several other significant works.

March 27, 1975: On this day, Fergie Duhamel was born. In her musical career, she has found success both as a solo recording artist and as a member of the Black Eyed Peas. Additionally, she co-founded Ferguson Crest winery in Santa Ynez.

March 27, 2020: On this day, the film Uncorked was released. The film follows Elijah, a young man with two jobs – one at his family’s barbecue restaurant, and one working with wines. He is pulled between his dream of becoming a master sommelier and his obligation of inheriting the family business.
