1951 - Provence VDQS first established

The major appellation of the Provence wine area in southeast France is Côtes de Provence AOC. The vast bulk of the rosé wine produced in Provence is grown on an area of vineyards that is around 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres) in size. With the exception of 2250 hectares (5500 acres) just north of Toulon, which are reserved for the Côteaux Varois en Provence label, this appellation encompasses the majority of the viticulture in the Var department, which is effectively the eastern half of the Provence wine region.
