Lane Tanner started her career

1981 - Lane Tanner started her career

Lane Tanner is an American winemaker and consultant. When she began working in the field in 1981, she was only the second women winemaker in Santa Barbara County. “Pinot Czarina” is the moniker she goes by. Tanner began working at the Konocti Winery in Kelseyville’s bottling department, where he applied wine labels to bottles. She started working as a lab technician after the winery found out she had studied chemistry. She spent a year there as Andre Tchelistcheff’s employee. Tchelistcheff made an employment recommendation for her at Firestone Winery. She joined Firestone as a winemaker in 1981. She was able to hone her wine-tasting talents at Firestone, and in 1984 she established her own consulting business. Her first customer was The Hitching Post, who ordered wine from her. She was a pioneer in the use of Pinot grapes from Bien Nacido Vineyard in winemaking. She left the wine sector at the end of 2010. Tanner was appointed winemaker for Sierra Madre Vineyard¬†in 2012.
