1983 - Green Valley AVA was established
The Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA (formerly Sonoma County Green Valley AVA) is an American Viticultural Area located in Sonoma County, California. The Russian River Valley AVA, which is located in the southwest corner of the Russian River Valley AVA, is one of Sonoma County’s coolest appellations. Of comparison to other areas, the climate in the Russian River Valley’s Green Valley is noticeably colder, which is perfect for the development of cool-climate grape types including Pinot noir, Chardonnay, and Gewürztraminer. The Sonoma County Green Valley AVA designation, which was given to Green Valley on November 21, 1983, was architecturally connected to the Solano County Green Valley AVA established in 1982.Due to the better market recognition of Russian River Valley wines, several wines that could have been labeled with the Sonoma County Green Valley AVA classification were instead labeled with the more inclusive appellation designation of the Russian River Valley AVA. In order to identify the Green Valley with the more well-known Russian River Valley, a group of local winemakers petitioned the United States Department of the Treasury Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau for a name change.
