1540 - First vines were planted in Peru
Peru became the first nation in Latin America to produce wine when the first vines were planted there in 1540. The earliest vinification in South America happened on the Cuzco hacienda Marcahuasi, according to historical Spanish chroniclers. But the biggest and most well-known vineyards in the Americas throughout the 16th and 17th centuries were built in the Ica valley in south-central Peru.
