September 22, 2005: On this day, Abadía Retuerta‘s “Special Selection 2001” was awarded as “the best red wine in the world” by the International Wine Challenge. Abadía Retuerta was built as a luxury hotel to refashion and preserve The Abbey of Santa María de Retuerta, an 8 century old site, with a unique wine tradition and a farm located on the Douro River.
