September 22, 1943: On this day, Robert Finigan was born. He was a San Francisco-based American wine and restaurant critic, most active in the late 1970s and early 1980s, during which he released a popular newsletter. He passed away on October 1st, 2011.
September 22, 2005: On this day, Abadía Retuerta‘s “Special Selection 2001” was awarded as “the best red wine in the world” by the International Wine Challenge. Abadía Retuerta was built as a luxury hotel to refashion and preserve The Abbey of Santa María de Retuerta, an 8 century old site, with a unique wine tradition and a farm located on the Douro River.
