November 4, 1592 : On this day, Gerhard Van Honthorst was born. He was a Dutch painter from Utrecht who was a deep admirer of Italian art, traveling to Italy and learning from Caravaggio’s works. One of his most famous paintings is titled Happy Violinist with a Glass of Wine.

November 4, 1930: On this day, Frank J. Prial was born. He was a writer and novelist best known for his column “Wine Talk” for the New York Times. In addition, he wrote a number of books on wine, such as The Companion to Wine. The French government inducted him into the Légion d’Honneur for his work demystifying wine for the common reader. He passed away on November 6, 2012.

November 4, 1973: On this day, winemakers wanted a way to differentiate wines produced from different grape types, so they came up with the Vin de pays label. This was done to increase the output value outside the A.O.C. Since 2009, the European Commission has given them the designation of Indication Géographiques Protégée (I.G.P.), which is a sign of increased international protection.

November 4, 1986: On this day, Aglianico del Taburno gained its DOC Italian appellation. While on November 10, 2011, it achieved its DOCG status. Aglianico del Taburno is the name of an Italian wine appellation given to red and rosé (rosato) wines that contain at least 85 percent Aglianico grapes in their production. The standard red Aglianico del Taburno must be matured for a least two years before receiving the Riserva label. Still, a wine with the Riserva label should last for at least three years, one of which must be in wood. These wines may get better with age. The red wines of Aglianico del Taburno are at their finest when paired with meat, particularly roasts, stews, and sauces; nevertheless, they may also be enjoyed with aged cheese.

November 4, 1987: On this day, Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato appellation was granted DOC status.

November 4, 1988: On this day, Grover Zampa Vineyards Limited was incorporated and became a leading exporter in India. Wineries and vineyards belonging to Grover Zampa Vineyards (GZV) may be found in the Nandi Hills region of Karnataka and the Nashik Valley region of Maharashtra. The 180 worldwide honors that have been bestowed upon this organization are the direct consequence of an age-old determination to preserve a prestigious tradition and an unwavering dedication to excellence.

November 4, 2002: On this day, the first edition of the California Code of Sustainable Winegrowing was written and published. Late in 2006 saw the publication of the workbook’s second edition, while January 2013 saw the third and most current version launch. December 2020 saw the publication of the fourth and most recent edition.
