November 27, 2006: Two American Viticultural Areas were established on the same day. The Chehalem Mountains AVA, in Oregon’s northern Willamette Valley west of Portland, became a distinct Pinot Noir appellation spanning some of the region’s highest vineyards across basalt, marine-sediment, and windblown-loess soils. The Shawnee Hills AVA, set among the forested hills of southern Illinois north of the Ohio River, became that state’s first viticultural area and the anchor of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail.For more dates in wine history, click here.
