March 1, 1825: On this day, Charles Krug was born in Prussia. Krug emigrated to the United States in 1847 and became an apprentice to Agoston Haraszthy and, later, John Patchett. He is the founder of Charles Krug Winery, the first commercial winery in California, which was established in 1851, the year before he gained citizenship. He passed away October 31st, 1892.
