March 1, 1825: Charles Krug was born in Prussia. Krug emigrated to the United States in 1847 and became an apprentice to Agoston Haraszthy and, later, John Patchett. He is the founder of Charles Krug Winery, the first commercial winery in California, which was established in 1851, the year before he gained citizenship. He passed away October 31^st, 1892.

March 1, 1836: John Adlum, often called the father of American viticulture, died. Adlum championed the native Catawba grape, published A Memoir on the Cultivation of the Vine in America (1823), and did much to establish winegrowing as a serious pursuit in the young United States.

March 1, 1989: Iceland held its first Beer Day (Bjordagurinn), marking the end of a beer prohibition that had been in force since 1915.
