June 27, 1999: On this day the Extremadura wine region was established. Located in the south west of Spain near the Portuguese border, Extramadura is most well known for its Iberian ham, an expensive delicacy worldwide. However, it is also the fourth-largest wine region in the country, and though its wines have not yet attained their popularity, the region’s exports of corks are known for their high quality.
