July 25, 44: Saint James the Greater (Santiago), patron saint of Spain, was by tradition martyred on this day in AD 44 — the reason his feast is kept each July 25. His pilgrimage route, the Camino de Santiago, threads through great Spanish wine regions such as Rioja and Navarra, where the Bodegas Irache winery famously runs a free wine fountain (the Fuente del Vino) for passing pilgrims.
