July 2, 1909: On this day, the Passage of the 16th Amendment, which established the Federal Income Tax, took place. By 1918, over sixty percent of the funding for the Federal Government comes from income taxes. As the primary source of income for the Government, it takes the place of tariff charges and excise taxes, particularly those on alcoholic beverages.
