July 18, 1957: On this day, Sir Nicholas Alexander Faldo was born. He was a famous professional golfer, and after his professional retirement has held a role for both CBS Sports and BBC Sport as a golf commentator. He is the owner of Nick Faldo Wines, which is run in collaboration with Katnook Estate. To date, he is the only living British golfer to be knighted by the Queen.

July 18, 2004: On this day, Émile Peynaud died. A French oenologist and researcher known as “the father of contemporary enology,” Émile Peynaud is credited for changing winemaking in the second half of the 20th century. Peynaud was eager to learn everything there was to know about the process of making wine, from the vineyard to the bottle. Many years after their publication, his books The Taste of Wine: The Art and Science of Wine Appreciation and Knowing and Making Wine are still considered classics. He also served as a consultant to dozens of vineyards throughout the world, spreading his views through writing.

July 18, 2014: Malibu Coast was granted AVA status. Grapes have been planted in the region as early as 1824. The AVA spans 46 miles long and 9 miles wide. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah are its three primary varieties. Malibu Coast AVA boasts volcanic soils that warm easily, providing thermal effects during the evenings and preventing mildew.
