January 7, 1883: On this day in 1883 Don Silvestre Ochagavia Errazuriz died. Errazuriz lived an amazing life and had had a major impact on the Chilean wine industry. Having studied viticulture in France he returned to his country with a wide range of Bordeaux varietals, which are still grown in Chile to this day. His winery Vina Ochagavia is almost solely responsible for the heavy French influence on Chilean wine culture.
