August 5, 1893: On this day, the Mudgee region of Australia began producing wine. Grapes were initially cultivated in the Mudgee region in 1858, and by August 5, 1893, there were a total of 55 vineyards in the area. Beginning in 1974, larger wineries got back into the planting business.

August 5, 1908: On this day, Gustave Niebaum, founder of Inglenook, passed away at the age of 66 from heart disease. His family would continue to operate Inglenook for several decades. Inglenook survives as a winery under the ownership of Francis Ford Coppola and his family.

August 5, 1981: On this day in the history the “Santa Maria Valley AVA” was founded. As California’s second oldest designated viticultural area following Napa Valley, it is famous for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

August 5, 1990: On this day, British Columbia established the Canadian named origin system known as Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA).
