August 29, 1961: The German Wine Fund was established. The institute, in the same year, founded the “Generation Riesling” organization to give young winemakers in Germany a platform on a national and international scale that was free from the ties of pre-existing interest organizations. Members must be winegrowers who are 35 years of age or younger and who are highly qualified, experienced abroad, and quality-focused. They serve as representatives of a cutting-edge, excellent, and vibrant German wine scene. The 10th anniversary was recently honored in June 2016 by over 500 members, who network and organize events and tastings all around the world.
August 29, 1978: Three bottles of poisoned wine are delivered to three people in Montevideo, Uruguay’s affluent Pocitos area. The bottles were put outside the residence of National Party politician Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera with blue paper wrappings, envelopes, and cards. The wines were Rieslings made by Los Cerros de San Juan, the oldest winery in the nation, which is located about 200 kilometers (120 miles) west of the city. Each one was accompanied by a message sent to Mario Héber Usher, Carlos Julia Pereyra, and Lacalle, members of the center-right political party. Each is inscribed with the words “Let us drink to our country in its new phase on Thursday at noon” and is signed “MDN.” Cecilia Fontana, Mario Héber’s 49-year-old wife, poured herself a glass of Riesling on September 5 and passed away by nightfall. The agricultural insecticide Mevinphos, which is toxic, has been poisoned in lethal doses in each bottle. Despite several ideas and new information since then, as well as the fact that Cecilia Fontana’s son, Luis Alberto Héber, is currently serving as Uruguay’s Minister of Interior, no one has been legally charged with the murder.
August 29, 1980: The wine aroma wheel was pioneered by Dr. A.C. Noble at University of California, Davis. It is designed to depict all of the different flavors and scents that wine can have, organized as a pie chart with different colors denoting different aroma varieties.
