August 19, 1937: The Junta Nacional do Vinho (JNV) was created in Portugal by Decree-Law No. 27,977. Established under the Estado Novo’s corporative system, it regulated wine production, prices, and the distillation of surpluses across central and southern Portugal for decades, shaping the modern Portuguese wine trade until it was succeeded by the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho.
August 19, 1941: Nancy Ponzi, co-founder of Ponzi Vineyards in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and of BridgePort Brewing, was born.
August 19, 1982: Cienega Valley AVA was established in California. The area is notable for having some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the state, and was mainly used as the source of grapes for Almaden Vineyards between 1950 and 1980.
