August 16, 1920: On this day, Champagne from France was permitted to be imported for medical purposes by the authorities. Wealthy Americans took advantage of this odd Prohibition loophole.

August 16, 1924: On this day, Fess Parker was born. Parker was a renowned American television, film actor, and winemaker. Parker founded the Fess Parker Winery, which specializes in the production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

August 16, 1982: On this day, Paicines AVA was established in the state of California within San Benito AVA. Paicines AVA is home to premium quality wines, including Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Most of its grapes are supplied outside the AVA. Paicines experiences warmer temperatures than other AVAs in San Benito County since its lowly elevated, buffeted by cooling winds from Monterey Bay. A majority of its grapes are sold to external wineries, and had a reputation for supplying cheaper wines through the 80s and 90s. A number of vineyards in the area are attempting to change that by producing higher quality grapes.

August 16, 2002: It was on this day that the grapes for the Dominus Estate Christian Moueix Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa County, Napa Valley, and Yountville were harvested. This vintage was highly lauded by critics.
