August 11, 1969: Rosso Piceno—a Sangiovese-and-Montepulciano red from Italy’s Marche region—was recognized as a DOC by Presidential Decree of 11 August.
August 11, 1971: Vernaccia di Oristano became the first wine on Sardinia to receive DOC status, by Presidential Decree of 11 August 1971. The oxidatively aged, sherry-like fortified white is one of Italy’s most distinctive traditional wines.
