August 1, 10 BC: On this day, Claudius, in full Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus was born. Claudius, the fourth Roman emperor, governed from AD 41 to AD 54. Claudius, a descendant of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, was born in Roman Gaul’s Lugdunum, where his father was serving as a military legate. His parents were Drusus and Antonia Minor. Claudius had the entire Moslavina hill, which was then known as Mons Claudius and is located in northern Croatia, planted with vines in the first century.

August 1, 1903: Charlie Carlo Rossi, known as the “King of Jug Wine,” was born on this day. He was a wine shipper during Prohibition. In 1962, he introduced Mountain Red, a cheap red wine sold in a large jug.

August 1, 2014: Manton Valley AVA was established. Vineyards were planted in Tehama County as early as 1800, but it was not until 2014 that the county received its first formally approved AVA, Manton Valley. However, the AVA spreads to Shasta County as well. The 11178 acre-AVA consists of 200 acres of planted vineyards. Several varietals are planted in this AVA, including Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and Sauvignon Blanc.
